Spaying & Neutering Your Pets

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe and the Town of Truckee have partnered to promote spaying and neutering for all dogs and cats in our community. This subsidized program is available to help offset some of the costs associated with spay/neuter surgery so all pet owners can afford it.

The Community Spay/Neuter Program is open to permanent residents of Truckee, North Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas who require financial assistance with sterilizing their pets. Pet owners pay a set fee (see below) and HSTT and the Town of Truckee cover the rest of the expense. The fees are as follows:

ALL CATS: $40

ALL DOGS: $60

Why Spay or Neuter

Pet over-population is the root cause of many animal related problems. Each year shelters across America euthanize millions of animals because there are not enough homes to go around. Having your pet sterilized will help alleviate this burden.

It’s Good For Your Pet!

  • Spaying/neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
  • Spaying eliminates uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces breast cancer.
  • Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

It’s Good For You!

  • Spayed/neutered pets make better, more affectionate companions.
  • Neutered cats are less likely to spray or mark their territory.
  • Spayed dogs and cats don’t go into heat (females in heat can cry incessantly, act nervous, and attract unwanted male animals).
  • Spayed/neutered animals are less likely to bite.
  • Neutered pets are less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, or get into fights.
  • How to Participate
  • Fill out and submit an online application. HSTT will call you to schedule an    appointment and accept payment of fees.
  • Because of age or illness, some animals may not be appropriate candidates for spaying/neutering. Please consult with your veterinarian if it’s right for your pet.
